the fambily. alfielaine Alfie Laine --- The story goes like this: Alfie was born, and for the first eight and a half months of his life, he was "Bug-ee! >:O" - three year old speak for 'ugly.' So Aubrey wasn't the perfect big sister from day one, but as soon as the new baby learned to crawl and felt she was the beacon of light he needed to follow absolutely everywhere, she was easily swayed. By the time little Bug (she insisted she had just nicknamed him with love) was walking, the two were inseparable, and spent the rest of their childhood that way. They had wild imaginations and used the seemingly endless land they lived on as their playground, more interested in running around speaking 'Russian' and throwing imaginary light sabres at imaginary sand people (or Dad) than their schoolwork - all of which they covered, much to Mum's anger, in purple crayon drawings. Always. As they years went on, they didn't grow apart - only closer, even as Aubrey moved away, first to Port Augusta, then Adelaide, then Los Angeles. It's a rare day they don't speak (or shriek, unintelligible to anyone but the pair of them) on the phone, and despite their frequent physical distance, they are still the closest of all the kids in the fambily. Aubrey has always been insanely protective of Alfie, almost to a fault, and has more than once threatened physical violence to interested girls who she doesn't deem suitable. Luckily, he's settled in with the only person she considers as good a caretaker as she is, and they can all live in peace on the same street in LA.
august August Laine --- If Aubrey was the beacon of light little Alfie followed, August was that same to Aubrey. In typical little sister fashion, she's always idolized him, believing he can do no wrong no matter what he does. She admits to the bias happily, and is easily the biggest fan and cheerleader of his work. Her own rocky relationship with her father made August the primary positive older male influence in her life, and in a lot of ways, he's filled the Dad shoes perfectly since she's been young. When she wasn't outside playing with Alfie, Aubrey spent a lot of her younger years sitting alongside August at the piano their Mum taught all of them on, often too distracted to give much thought to the keys, happier to let August play while she stood on the bench next to him, singing her little heart out, not having to stay still and pay attention. To this day, she still loves sitting with August while he plays, and comes to him first for help with her own music, not entirely believing she's gotten the famibily gene herself. The two of them are more similar than they can admit, although they both recognize their own short fuse and quick temper in each other - and take it out on each other, too. As close as they are, they also fight the worst, and on more than several occasions have ended up screaming and throwing things at each other in rage.
the friends. jonsson Julian Jonsson --- Even if he weren't married to Alfie, Julian is close enough of a friend to be considered fambily. From the first day she met Alfie's bandmates, Aubrey and Jules bonded over cigarettes, shortness and being absolutey ridiculous in general - these days their bonds have shifted slightly (to Jacob Black and WoW... they're both still short), but they're just as strong as ever. Shortly after Jules' fifteenth birthday, Aubrey gave him the best present ever by taking his virginity and proudly holding onto it. Unlike most of her conquests, it managed to somehow make she and Jules closer, and in the four years since then, he's become one of her best friends and one of the few people she actually opens up to. She doesn't trust many, but trusts Jules with her life - and her most precious little brother, entrusting Jules with taking care of Alfie when she couldn't. He was the best, and she wasn't surprised at all when they ended up happily ever after so young.
bradycollins Brady Collins --- A musical fambily broadened Aubrey's horizions more than most teenagers, and despite not looking the part, the soundtrack of her youth was a long line of punk bands, including one of her favourites, Sons of Uisneach. Aubrey was seventeen and fresh off of her gold medal sweep when she got the opportunity to see them live, taking her sisters to the show in Adelaide. Post concert, she caught the bands attention when fans were asking her for more autographs than them, and after striking up a conversation with the lead singer, Aubrey ended up following the rest of the tour. From then on, she and Brady were close friends, hanging out frequently once she moved to Los Angeles. She's followed them on a few tours and performed with them on Valentine's Day 2008, but more importantly, Brady has become one of her closest friends - the closest friend she hasn't slept with, actually, and she is okay with that. They'd make super attractive children (which they have discussed, and scoffed at, because they'd also be wicked drunk and basically impossible), but no. They're fine how they are.
spencerjordan Spencer Jordan --- They can't remember if it was Aubrey's friendship with Spencer's cousin Hallie, or Spencer's relationship with Aubrey's friend Dylan that brought them together, but the details don't matter that much anyway. What matters is they found each other, because they immediately hit it off, and have been close friends ever since - well, mostly. There was that small tiff when Spencer learned the hard way what lying to Aubrey will do, and that time Aubrey got fucked up and pissed Spencer off. But no one gets along all the time - they're still great friends, and will travel together, snuggle up in diners, and have sleepovers at each other's apartments, usually complete with chocolate ice cream and The Princess Bride. Such lack of hiding their platonic affection have set the gossip mill on fire on more than one occasion. Rumours of a lesbian fling have them referring to each other as girlfriend, running with it - and why not? That's what girl's who are friends tend to do. Aubrey calls Spencer her sunshine, and for good reason - she lights up her life. Aww.
cam Cam Trevelyan --- When Aubrey first met Cam, he was hooking up with Caleb - and she was, to her disbelief, jealous that she had to share her best friend. Despite Caleb being as much of a slut as she was and this being a common occurance, it was the one time Aubrey questioned their relationship, and how she really felt about it. Nothing changed, she realized, and managed to get over it and actually befriend the dude in question, finding herself with an awesome new friend - one with a super cute accent and affinity for throwing out compliments to boot. What more could she want in a guy?
corra Matt Corra --- One of the most important tools in staying clean and sober is being able to talk to someone who knows what it's like. For Aubrey, Matt is that person - he's been there and managed to get himself together, and is just a really good guy. Aubrey hasn't known him that long, but has taking up his offer to crash for awhile while she's in New York trying to get her life back in order and counting on him to help keep her on the straight and narrow.
dohrety Alex Dohrety --- They don't really know each other all that well, but their musical tastes are completely identical. For two musical people like Alex and Aubrey, that's grounds enough to be considered friends by default - and he's slated to be her boyfriend for five minutes.
the rest. jayda Jayda Barclay -- Fighting over the same boots and hiding from the mobs in an ice cream cart does weird things to bond people. For these two, it spawned the first big female friendship for the both of them, an immediate attachment formed before subsequently getting a place in LA together. Nearly three years were spent as BFFs, with another two as roomates, until everything all exploded when Aubrey was hospitalized for alcohol poisoning and Jayda took the opportunity to then let her know she'd begun dating August. Both were incredibly angry and eventually patched things up, but it was never the same again - within three months, August and Jayda had ended, leaving Aubrey awkwardly stuck in the middle. After a few more months of constantly feeling pushed aside for Jayda's new boyfriend and new friends, a time came when Aubrey needed her friend desparately - and she never called back. She threw in the towel on then, and while she misses her at times, she's more filled with raging anger towards the girl. The fact she's back with August (and will inevitably crush him like the skank she is, Aubrey believes) doesn't help anything.
ldavis Lucy Davis --- Aubrey could like Lucy, and would like Lucy, if she hadn't been the very person Jayda had replaced her with. Okay, so she'd known Lucy longer - but for years, Aubrey had been the BFF, and as soon as she was out of the picture, Lucy seemed to jump right into place. No, no... Aubrey does like Lucy (it's impossible not to, really), but they'll never be friends - her pride always complicates things, and won't allow her to befriend her anymore than she already has. Chatroom friendships don't count as real friendships. Really. (Loves Lucy... hates that Jayda got her first. Can't have both!)
iasonmiers Iason Miers --- The Agent. Considering him a friend would be unprofessional, but Aubrey is pretty fond of this guy, and incredibly grateful to have him in her court, now that she's getting her shit together. Despite her troubled year between the Olympic Trials and her abrupt return to Australia (which came with her quitting every single one of the roles she'd been slated for), he's still hanging around, trying to help her get her career, and life, sorted out.
marlan Marc Lang --- While she's always been a flirt and is generally better friends with guys, Aubrey has never been very good at dealing with relationships, or even anything remotely close to them. After meeting Marc around Hollywood, there was definitely an attraction there, and before long, the two were pretty good friends - with even better benefits. Of course, as things progressed, Marc started wanting more than Aubrey was willing or able to give up, namely, some sort of relationship. The moment she was aware of this, Aubrey ran for the hills, leaving Marc in the cold. He was great, but she was nowhere close to ready for that.
NPCs. Caleb Sanders --- On Aubrey's first day of Real School away from home and in Port Augusta, she wasn't the only impressionable 12 year old to notice the tall, dark and handsome 15 year old hanging out on the front steps with an devilish grin and a cigarette. She was one of the few, however, who wasn't too concerned with him. Back then, Aubrey was too shy and too focused on her swimming and adjusting to life without her fambily around 24/7 to bother with boys. That didn't last too long, however, and once she hit the school's party scene less than a year later, the tiny blonde decided he was what she wanted... and so she had him. What was initially a serial hookup quickly become a close friendship, with both of them quitting school and subsequently rising to fame around the same time. Speculation always ran rampant, but aside from the occasional - okay, frequent but still essentially meaningless - hookup, there was never anything more between the two. After both moving to LA within the same month, Aubrey and Caleb became even closer still, being old friends in a new place, and both taking full advantage of the nightlife. Best friend status was attained quickly, and were they not chronic fuckbuddies, he'd likely be considered a brother - but that's just awkward. Caleb knows Aubrey better than anyone, and she loves him more than just about everyone, but the constant rumours of a relationship are nothing more than that. They love each other dearly, and that is exactly why they won't ever be together.
Bailey Riain --- Aubrey was never one for relationships, ever, but something about Bailey was hard to get away from. He was a friend first, and nothing more than a friend for a long time, despite what the gossip said. They fell in love sometime over the summer, and it was scary - it was her first try with handling real emotional attachment, and while she wasn't particularly good at it, no one could take off marks for lack of effort. Things were well, despite his battle with cancer, her battle with addictions, and their seemingly constant battle with the outside world at large. When he was in the hospital, she flew home to see him weekly, and when she was in rehab, he was stationed just down the street. She had never believed in much of anything before, but was quickly certain he was the one. Things seemed to hit an irrepairable snag just after his mother passed away, when his mood swings worsened, her soberiety came into serious jeopardy, and they both ended up cheating. They spent the next two months off and on and had finally seemed to reach a stable place in their relationship when something finally snapped and Aubrey came off the wagon, and after a few days to think about it her anger and frustration all turned towards Bailey - he had pushed her there, she claimed, his own addictions fueling her need, and constant tabloid rumours of him with other women breaking her heart (not that she'd admit that, ever) and sending her over the edge. Before they had a chance to reconcile (again), he was found dead and she fleed home and went into hiding. She's been working hard, but whether she'll ever get over the loss (and the guilt she's feeling for the way things were when his life suddenly ended) remains to be seen.
Phoebe Hollingsworth --- Everything Aubrey is, Phoebe isn't - which is why Aubrey found it hard to believe that Bailey had held any interest in her, let alone wanted to marry the girl. A preachy hippy with nasty hair? Ew. It was a strange mix of insecurity and a superiority complex that turned the disbelief into loathing, and biased stories from her boyfriend were enough to turn Aubrey against her fully. She came to learn that most of what Phoebe claimed was closer to the truth than anything Bailey said, but it didn't make her like Phoebe anymore. In fact, since Bailey's death, the two have clashed and become full-out enemies, although Aubrey tends to avoid her rather than start things. If Phoebe starts, however....
Abram Laine --- The Bug'n'Bunny Variety Show is a tough act to follow - ask the next Laine in line, Abram. His youngest years were spent trailing these two, always hoping to be let in on the fun. Instead, he was emphatically told he was stolen from gypsies and they didn't want him and were trying to sell him back - a family tradition that lives on to this day, even though he knows better. And they wondered why he was so grouchy and cranky when the two of them shot to fame and would come home for visits! Now that they're all mostly grown up, the teasing has been toned down, and they all manage to get along most of the time. As the only other athletic kid in the family, Aubrey and Abram often bond by running for miles just for the hell of it, seeing who can go the farthest before breaking down. They've actually gotten quite close, spending a few days together after news of their parents divorce broke, and living together with their dad before Aubrey returned to rehab, talking for hours and actually taking the time to get to know each other. Charming.
Alyse Laine --- All of the Laine kids are about three years apart, with the exception of Aubrey and Alyse, who only have a year and two weeks between them. Because of that, they've been grouped together the most (despite Aubrey and Alfie being inseperable, and Alyse always wanting to be with Ainsley) and spent most of their early years as a single entity - the little girls. Whether it was that forced togetherness or just genes has yet to be determined, but Aubrey and Alyse are as opposite as sisters can get, both in physical appearance and personality. Where Alyse is tall, dark haired and light eyed, Aubrey is short, blonde and dark eyed. Aubrey is as loud as Alyse is quiet; Alyse as calculated as Aubrey is implusive. Despite this, the girls are still very close, compliment each other wonderfully, and now even share a house together in Los Angeles.
Ainsley Cahill --- The first of seven, Ainsley is the oldest of the Laines, and was the quickest to depart the station when the time came. As the typical first of many, Ainsley is bossy, controlling and loud, while managing to be gentle, orderly and absolutley ridiculous at the same time. She married at 22 and has four daughters under the age of six, a husband pushing 40, and a whimpering obsession for fancy shoes that her little sister is more than happy to feed. At least when Ainsley is speaking to her: she's harsh and judgemental, and has, more than once, banned Aubrey from visiting when her behaviour gets out of hand. Fair? Maybe not, but that's Ainsley - she'd expect nothing less.
Asher Laine --- The baby of the family and by far the funniest, there is never a dull moment when Asher is around. Aubrey hasn't spent as much time with him as the rest of her sibs, he was only two when she moved away, but she's always given him that special bit of attention the baby status earns. A lot of time is spent on the phone, and she often gets quite upset when she misses monumental moments of his life - but he's so easy going and happy that he just throws some candy at her, tells her its cool, and shares his new favourite joke. He's the best rock band drummer the world has ever seen, and is currently obsessed with WoW - which he forced Aubrey into, mostly so he can tease her and dance around while she gets killed over and over again.
Vanessa Laine --- Everyone's favourite Mum, Vanessa heads up the fambily as the warmest, most attentive Mum anyone could imagine - clear overcompensation for Dad's lack of Dadskills. Having once dreamt of a career in animal sciences, perhaps at a zoo in one of the major cities, Vanessa somehow ended up as mother of seven little beasts in the middle of nowhere. Well, it was sort of like a zoo. The biggest Mummy's girl of them all, Aubrey not only looks most like Vanessa, but is the most attached. Her younger years were spent at Mum's side, putting Vanessa's education to use and rescuing injured animals that stumbled upon the station, while her later ones include a large chunk of time devoted to daily phonecalls back to her dear Mummy. They have a ridiculously good relationship most of the time, so long as Aubrey is behaving and doesn't give Vanessa reason to yell, and Vanessa is not preaching too much.
David Laine --- What he lacks in Dadskills, he makes up in... well, no one is quite sure, but he lacks skills in technology also, so it's not just the kids. Handed down the station the Laine fambily grew up on, David's life was devoted to keeping things running first, fambily second. He doesn't have a bad relationship with most of the kids, per se, and as time went on, he managed to get better - Asher and Abram have a fonder look on him than Aubrey and Alfie do; Alyse was always his girl, and Ainsley is old enough to be past it. Aubrey's relationship with David was always the worst, resenting early on that he didn't give her the attention her sister was given. It was at his suggestion, then for his attention (which didn't work) that she took up swimming, and for a long time, she held him personally responsible for the less than positive effects that had on her. Taking him to therapy with her in Los Angeles seemed to be the final straw in an attempt to salvage some sort of relationship with him, but later it seemed that had been their rockbottom - things have looked up from there. Since David and Vanessa's divorce in October 08, Aubrey has visited him on her own (even living with him for a month between LA and rehab), and after spending a day watching Indiana Jones movies and eating nothing but scotch fingers, they seem to be on the right path to not hating each other.
